Thousand Candles Gathering Field 'Nouveau Red' 2018 Yarra Valley
Stuart Proud tends the vineyard and makes the wines, which makes him a very busy and dedicated individual on this big Yarra Valley farm. This was a winner from first sniff and sip. The other Gathering Field releases from Thousand Candles feel more colour-by-numbers than this cuvee, though the easy going 2018 rose and sauvignon blanc feel like their built for commercial success, a far cry from the ‘verity of site’ ideology that launched the vineyard and brand some seven or so years ago. Evolution, baby. This is a blend of pinot noir and syrah, built fresh and young.
This has some get up and go. Kicks off with crunchy texture, green-herbal edges, sour cherry in the mix. It’s refreshing, long in flavour, super perky, edgy and fun. It’s Campari and rose hip tea and pomegranate all jostling. A killer drink with just enough detail to tickle the mind, but really, its more about texture and that sense of freshness and vitality. Drink with a chill, if it pleases.
